The contracts were approved with a “limited” notice to proceed. A full notice to proceed will be issued following completion of a funding agreement with the Federal Transit Administration, which is expected to be finalized later this year.
The Caltrain’s Modernization Program includes the electrification of the San Francisco – San Jose existing corridor, the installation of the Communications Based Overlay Signal System Positive Train Control signaling of Diesel trains system and the replacement with electric ones. The first stage of the program requires investments of USD 1.76 billion, while the second one requires investments of USD 624 million.
The purchase of electric railcars is one of Caltrain’s most important projects and would replace 75% of the diesel vehicle fleet operating along the San Francisco – San Jose line.
