Cairo metro Line 3 extension enters operation

Cairo Metro Line 3 extensionCairo Metro Line 3 extension (phase 3C) started the trial operation with passengers providing transport connection between Kit Kat and the Cairo University.

The Minister of Transport Kamel El Wazir, witnessed the trial operation in the presence of Tarek Gewaily, Chairman of the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT), Mena Azer and Ahmed Abdelhady Project Managers of Alstom Egypt.

The 7.1 km metro extension is served by 5 stations from Al-Tawfiqia Station to Cairo University, passing through Wadi Al-Nil Street, the League of Arab States, and Boulak Al-Dakrour. Three stations are underground (Al-Tawfiqia – Nile Valley – Gamaet Al-Dawul), a surface station, Boulak Al-Dakrour, and an elevated station, Cairo University.

With the trial operation with passengers of the Cairo Metro Line 3 extension the third line has been fully operated for the public, starting from the giant Adly Mansour Central Interchange Station, passing through Kit Kat, then branching out north to the Rawd al-Farag axis and south to Cairo University. The entire Line 3 extends 41.2 km long and includes 34 stations.

This line also includes 3 workshops. For Umrah to maintain the mobile units operating on the line (Al-Abbasiya, on an area of 10 acres, and Imbaba, on an area of about 24 acres, where light overhauls of trains are carried out – Al-Salam, which is considered one of the largest workshops in the Middle East and Africa and was carried out on an area of 65 acres and is designated for light and major overhauls of trains).

This successful trial operation is part of a series of milestones achieved by Alstom. With the Urbalis solution, an advanced signalling system, we help operators to ease commuter congestion. Constantly upgraded, the solution aids urban operators in maximising their performance and capacity while providing standard supervision and control supporting their operational needs. Designed for heavy ridership metros, the system offers a considerable range of functions that improve headway and average speed performance. Alstom’s signalling solution will enable the whole Cairo metro Line 3 to run at speeds of 80 km/h, across 34 stations, 41.2km and ultimate capacity of 60,000 passengers per hour and per direction. The line is operating for 19 hours a day serving and transporting Egyptian citizens.
