CAF has been awarded two new contracts for metro units from its INNEO platform. On the one hand, it will manufacture 13 units for the Medellín Metro, and on the other, 6 units for the metropolitan area of the city of Santiago de Chile. The combined volume of the contracts exceeds EUR 200 million.
These agreements strengthen CAF‘s presence in the Latin American market, where it continues to develop important projects for the supply and maintenance of railway units, as well as under the rolling stock concession formula, in countries such as Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela and Ecuador, together with the aforementioned Colombia and Chile.
13 units for the Medellín Metro
The Empresa de Transporte Masivo del Valle de Aburrá Limitada – Metro de Medellín LTDA., operator of the Medellín Metro, has awarded CAF the design and supply of 13 metro trains for its metropolitan network. It should be noted that the agreement includes final assembly and testing at the Metro facilities, an aspect required by the Colombian authorities in the tender specifications.
The new units will be similar to those previously delivered by CAF, they will be made up of 3 cars each and will be fully interoperable with the current fleet in operation. They will be intended to provide service on lines A and B in order to respond to the increase in passenger demand expected for the coming years.
Medellín is the second most populous city in Colombia with a population of over 2.5 million, and is known for promoting the development of sustainable urban transport solutions. The metro network was inaugurated in 1995 and is the only one in the country, transporting more than 1 million people daily, making it the main transport system in Colombia, as well as one of the most prestigious metro systems in Latin America.
The relationship between CAF and Metro Medellín goes back a long way. CAF supplied 38 units between 2009 and 2018, having also more recently carried out the comprehensive rehabilitation of another 42 units of the fleet of MAN trains with which Metro Medellín began to operate the system in the 1990s.
Santiago de Chile will receive 6 trains
On the other hand, the Passenger Transport Company Metro SA – Metro Santiago, a Chilean state-owned company, has once again chosen CAF as the supplier and maintainer of its units, following successive previous orders in which the company has supplied nearly 80 units for lines 1, 3 and 6 of the Chilean capital’s metro.
On this occasion, CAF will design, supply and maintain 6 new units of 5 cars each for the extensions of Line 6. It is worth noting that the units will have the GoA4 automatic driving system, like 41 of the trains previously delivered by CAF for Lines 3 and 6. This is the highest level of railway automation, with no personnel on board, and with all functions, including driving, opening and closing of doors, safety and train operation, completely automated and controlled from a control centre.
