Amsterdam public transport company, GVB Activa, selected CAF as preferred bidder for the supply of 30 metro trains. The order includes up to 30 additional metros, as well as the optional extension of the ordered metros from 3-cars to 6-cars.
The new metros for Amsterdam consist of 3 cars, and can be coupled in pairs of two, resulting in a 6-car train. The metros are prepared for driverless operation. Furthermore, the metros are fitted with state-of-the-art equipment and passenger information systems, they are energy efficient and easy to maintain.
The trains will replace older generation of metros still in service and provide extra transport capacity on the busy Amsterdam metro network
In 1994, GVB awarded CAF a contract for the delivery of 37 metro trains, which currently provide transport services on Amsterdam’s metro network. Also, in 2016, GVB awarded CAF a contract for the supply of 63 trams, a project currently in execution.
In July, the city will open the Noord-Zuid line, its newest metro line, which connects Amsterdam Zuid Station to the suburbs located north of Ij River. The line has a length of 9.8 km and is served by 8 stations. At the Centraal Station and Zuid Station passengers have links to other metro lines in Amsterdam, but also connections to the suburban rail network, operated by Dutch Railways.
