At the end of April, the Municipal Council of Budapest has approved the rehabilitation of metro line 3, with a total project cost of HUF 139.5 billion (EUR 440 million).
According to Deputy Mayor for Urban Development, Balázs Szeneczey, the M3 project includes the acquisition of new equipment that replace the outdated ones, and the rehabilitation of the infrastructure. ‘The project can no longer be postponed. The increasingly frequent breakdowns cause considerable traffic disruption and increases the risk of emergency. The rehabilitation project provides an additional 20-25 years to secure adequate operating performance,’ he said.
The project includes the renovation of the stations and surface buildings, the modernisation of passenger spaces to meet EU standards.
Under Szeneczey’s proposal, the project covers the reconstruction of the entire line that will be launched in November 2016, and tracks laying will be completed until June 2019. By 30 September 2019, the modernization works will be completed.
The construction works are divided into three major phases. In November 2016, will begin in the north (on Lehel tér – Újpest Centre section) and the south (on Kőbánya-Kispest section). The procurement procedures for the execution of the three stages carried out at a time, so that the middle part of the restoration work can be started.
The infrastructure upgrade will be carried out by the Budapest Transport Company.
The M3 runs on north-south direction parallel to the Danube on the Pest side.
