Budapest Municipality has initiated the extension project, by 1.7 km, of tram Line 1. Railway extension works will be carried out from the junction of Etele/Fehérvári streets up to Kelenföld rail station.
Works will be completed in 2019, when passengers will be able to use tram Line 1 from the terminus station of Óbuda to the city suburbs in Pest area, then over the Danube in the southern region of Buda up to the rail depot.
The project is estimated at HUF 8.6 billion (EUR 27.6 million) and is 98.5% financed by the European Union. The rest of the amount will be granted by the Municipality.
With several sections combined, trams measure 55.9 metres which makes them the longest such vehicles in the world.
