Bucharest Municipality has decided to buy 24 new trams for its busiest tram routes. Bucharest General Council has approved two projects which envisage, in the first phase, the modernisation and equipment of tram lines 1 and 10 to be financed within the Operational Regional Programme 2014-2020. Both projects envisage the procurement of twelve new 36-m long trams for each line following an investment of RON 120.8 million (EUR 25.9 million). The Municipality’s own contribution to each project is RON 1.8 million (EUR 400.000).
Bucharest Mayor Gabriela Firea said that, overall, 100 new trams will be bought for Bucharest.
Eight financing demands were submitted on 17 May 2018 to procure the 100 trams for:
Line 1 – 12 trams, total cost RON 120.8 million (EUR 25.9 million)
Line 10 – 12 trams, total cost RON 120.8 million (EUR 25.9 million)
Line 21 – 12 trams, total cost RON 120.8 million (EUR 25.9 million)
Line 25 – 12 trams, total cost RON 120.8 million (EUR 25.9 million)
Line 32 – 12 trams, total cost RON 120.8 million (EUR 25.9 million)
Line 40 – 10 trams, total cost RON 100.7 million (EUR 21.5 million)
Line 41 – 20 trams, total cost RON 201.3 million (EUR 43.2 million)
Line 55 – 10 trams, total cost RON 100.7 million (EUR 21.5 million)
In 2017, to maintain the rolling track of STB trams (Bucharest Public Transport Company, former STB), spent around RON 2.6 million (EUR 557,000) on materials necessary to ensure maintenance.
Costs for tram rolling stock repair (materials, spare parts) in January-September 2018 amounted to RON 2.2 million.
Over the past two years, Bucharest Municipality completed several tram line rehabilitation works on:
-Liviu Rebreanu Boulevard – rehabilitation of road system and tram tracks – 2.78 km (tram double-track)
-Iancului Street – rehabilitation of road system and tram tracks – 6.51 km (tram double-track)
-Pantelimon Street – rehabilitation road system and tram tracks – 5.24 km (tram double-track)
Also, Bucharest Municipality has funds allocated in the 2018-2019 investment plan for new projects including the rehabilitation of new tram lines:
-penetration Prelungirea Ghencea – Domnesti and extension Bulevardul Ghencea between Str. Brasov and Terminal Tramvai 41 (tram line in the median area);
-rehabilitation road system and tram line Dimitrie Pompei and penetration Barbu Vacarescu;
-rehabilitation B-dul G-ral Vasile Milea road system;
-objective 5 Chitila Hub – median ring closure;
-rehabilitation B-dul Basarabia (between Sos. Mihai Bravu and Sos. Dudesti Pantelimon);
-extension Calea Calarasi – B-dul C. Coposu (str. Sfanta Vineri – Sos. Mihai Bravu);
Bucharest Municipality is developing a “Programme for the Procurement of Trams and equipment necessary to improve passenger public transport in 2018-2023”, and complementary investments, as follows:
- Tram lines 1 and 10 – modernisation tram line on b-dul General Vasile Milea from the junction with Timisoara Boulevard up to OMV gas station entrance – 1.1 km (double tram track)
- Tram line 40 – modernisation of tram line – 37.6 km (double tram track)
- Tram line 55 – modernisation of tram line between b-dul Pache Protopopescu – str. Traian – 12.8 km (tram double-track)
