Bucharest 2030 Mobility Plan put to vote

BucurestiBucharest General Council will vote today the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUD) through which, by 2030, the capital should benefit from an integrate, sustainable and safe transport system that would meet mobility needs.
PMUD covers Bucharest and its sectors, as well as Ilfov County, including 8 cities and 32 communes.
55 projects are proposed with a total value of EUR 6.8 billion, of which EUR 3.5 billion will be invested in metro extension and modernisation (with financing coming from the state budget and European funds), and EUR 3.3 billion is the local authorities’ investment in surface public transport, traffic management, cycling infrastructure projects etc.
Also, PMUD is a condition for accessing European funds for 2014-2020, through the Regional Operational Programme and through the Operational Programme Large Infrastructure and will be correlated to the General Transport MasterPlan, to the General Urban Planning, to the regional development plan, to local urban development strategies, and to sectoral social services strategies, health, education, creating jobs and economic development in the region.
For urban rail transport, the projects proposed in the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan include the development of the metro network at 123 km of metro lines, the procurement of 47 metro cars, the modernisation of 292 km of tram lines and the procurement/modernisation of 283 trams.
Public rail transport infrastructure projects include:Bucuresti-Propuneri-tramvai-rapid-autobuz-rapid-metrou
•    Tram network development, the acquisition of new trams, rehabilitation of tram/mixed depots and tram stations;
•    Development of the metro network: M6 (Otopeni Airport connection); M5 (Drumul Taberei-Pantelimon connection); M4 (to Bucureștii Noi – phase 2); M2 (the extension of the railway in Pipera by two stations); M3 (extension of the railway from Pacii by another 4 stations); rehabilitation of 51 metro stations; rolling stock procurement (metro cars);

It is important to mention that Bucharest authorities decided to modernise the tram fleet for which Bucharest Transport Operator (RATB) elaborated a project for the procurement of 100 new trams. The project was approved by the General Council of Bucharest (CGMB) and will be carried out on a period of 4 years. You can read more about the tram procurement project here.

Apart from these projects, the plan includes extensions of the bus and trolleybus networks, the development of special cycling lanes and facilities, pedestrian areas, rehabilitation and extension of roads (including county roads), the establishment of the parking strategy), creation and implementation of a new public transport programme in Ilfov County.
