Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway will be finalized by the end of this year, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said, during a meeting with Georgian and Azerbaijani counterparts, Mikheil Janelidze and Elmar Mаmmаdyarov respectively.
The foreign ministers of Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan have “highlighted the key role of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway in facilitating competitive transportation between Asia and Europe, noted with content the successful testing of the Georgian section of the railway in 2015 and reiterated the utmost importance of the earliest start of operation of the BTK railway,” read the joint statement issued after the Fifth Meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the three countries, on February 19.
This project will effectively open a new rail-only corridor from the Caspian Sea to Europe via Turkey, eventually excluding the need for sea transportation once the planned rail tunnel under the Bosporus Strait in Istanbul is complete. he Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project could also open a North-South rail corridor linking Russia to Turkey.
