Brescia will reintroduce tram transport

Brescia Mobilità (Brescia Transport Authority) and Italian Railways (FS Italiane) signed an agreement for the construction of two new tram lines. To this end, by the end of 2018, the municipality of Brescia intends to apply for funding from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. Funding could be provided by the Government. One of the two tram lines will run from Pendolina, northwest of Brescia, to the new Pala Eib sports center, located in the southwest of the Italian city. The second tram line will make the connection between Via Vallecamonica, in the western part of Brescia and Viale Bornata, in the east.

In January 2018, Renato Mazzoncini, CEO of the FS Italiane Group, said the financing of the construction of the two new lines could be provided by the Italian railway company. The statement was made after November 2017, FS Italiane and CDP Investment Bank signed a co-operation agreement to develop urban rail transport networks. It is important to note that in Brescia the tram has been circulating since 1882, but it was closed in 1949. Brescia is, however, the smallest Italian city with a metro line.
