Bombardier to modernise S-Bahn Stuttgart train fleet

S-Bahn Stuttgart train fleet Deutsche Bahn awarded Bombardier Transportation a EUR 103 million contract for the modernisation of S-Bahn Stuttgart train fleet.

The contract includes the provision of engineering services to redesign the 423 and 430 series fleets, along with the modernisation and delivery of three converted prototype vehicles per series and the material delivery for the modernisation of the remaining vehicles, to be carried out in-house by S-Bahn Stuttgart.

The development will take place at Bombardier’s Mannheim and Hennigsdorf sites, while the required modernisation of the prototypes will be carried out in Hennigsdorf.

The modernisation project includes new interior design, the installation of new passenger information and entertainment system, as well as charging stations.

The new interior design is characterised by an optimised allotment of the various vehicle areas. In addition, the trains will be equipped with Wi-Fi, a modern passenger information and infotainment system combined with electrical sockets for charging mobile devices in various vehicle areas.

The existing multi-purpose areas at the end of the car will be supplemented by two additional multi-purpose compartments in the middle. These are optimised for bicycles and equipped entirely with folding seats and comfortable elements to lean on. In the future, passengers with bicycles will be able to access parking spaces from two entry doors. Easier access to the multi-purpose compartments in the front and back of the vehicle is made possible by modified seating arrangements for wheelchair users and strollers.

An automatic passenger counting system will also be introduced so that, among other things, a targeted forecast of the utilization of trains will be possible in the future. After the modernisation, the trains will be equipped similarly to the latest vehicles that were ordered in 2018 and whose prototypes are currently being manufactured in Hennigsdorf.

The S-Bahn Stuttgart train fleet consists of 157 trains “many of which have been in reliable operation in the Stuttgart area for more than two decades and will be extended to 215 trains,” François Muller, Head of Services at Bombardier Transportation in Germany, explained.

The train fleet covers more than 23 million km each year providing transport services for more than 400,000 passengers per day.

After the modernisation of S-Bahn Stuttgart train fleet, the passengers will benefit increased comfort.

“With the interior elements of our redesign, we are meeting the latest requirements for urban mobility. For passengers in the Stuttgart region, this means better passenger service and more space for wheelchairs, strollers as well as bicycles through additional multi-purpose areas,” Dirk Rothenstein, the CEO of S-Bahn Stuttgart, said.
