Bombardier Transportation, in consortium with two Egyptian companies, Orascom Construction and the Arab Contractors, was named the preferred bidder for two monorail projects in Cairo.
The total value of the projects is EUR 3 billion, of which Bombardier’s share is estimated at EUR 1.2 billion for the design and build contract. In addition, there is a 15+15 years operations and maintenance contract with a potential value of about EUR 1.1 billion. The rolling stock part of the order will be developed and built in Derby, UK.
One of the projects envisages the construction of a 54-km monorail system connecting the New Administrative City with East Cairo and the second 42-km line will link 6th October City with Giza.
The two monorail projects will be operated by 27 trains running at speeds of 80 km/h, which will be able to transport 48,000 passenger per hour/direction.
