According to an urban transport project, initiated by the Senate of Traffic Administration, in 2019-2023, the German capital will benefit from measures including the extension of the tram networks, metro networks (U-Bahn) and suburban networks (S-Bahn).
Thus, Berlin administration plans to build new tram lines, new stations and S-Bahn lines. After 2030, the transport plan also stipulates the extension of new metro lines, such as U2, U6, U7, U8 and U9.
The municipality says the rail transport network has to be extended as, according to estimates, public transport share will increase by 26% until 2030.
Consequently, tram lines to be extended are those already busy such as Steglitz line to the Municipality, Hermannplatz-Zoo line, as well as other lines in Spandau area, from Rathaus to Falkenhagener Feld, Heerstraße Nord and on medium term, the line via Gartenfeld to Jungfernheide. The project submitted to approval also includes the extension of the tram line from the central railway station (Berlin Hauptbahnhof) to Turmstraße, the extension of lines to the Eastern Railway Station (Ostkreuz), but also the completion of the railway on Adlershof-Schöneweide section.
Moreover, to increase the transport capacity, public transport company BVG announced that the new S-Bahn trains to be purchased will be 50-m long, compared to the 40-m long trains that currently run in Berlin. The new 50m-long trains will be put into service on the busiest railways, to Alexanderplatz, on Pankow network, as well as on the route in Karlshorst-Schöneweide-Köpenick area.
