Basel Transport Authority (BVB) opened the city’s first light rail link into Germany on December 14 with a day of free rides on the northern extension of Line 8 from Kleinhüningen to Weil-am-Rhein in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. BVB operates a 15 minute service on the extension on weekdays, with every second tram on Line 8 continuing to the terminus at Weil-am-Rhein Main Station. Passengers can travel freely across the border, with German customs officers travelling on the trams carrying out random checks.
