Australia: NSW starts pilot to improve rural rail services

07-australiaNew South Wales (NSW) has launched a pilot project for a scheme to improve rural rail services. Expressions of interest are being invited for a $15m pilot, which will pave the way for the $400m ‘Fixing Country Rail’ programme.
The ‘Fixing Country Rail’ programme will deliver a highly functional transport network across the state for moving freight in and out of regional areas, and will ease pressure on local roads.
“The pilot will determine how to best approach the full $400 million Fixing Country Rail initiative which will deliver rail upgrades such as rail sidings, passing loops, opening unused rail lines and track upgrades to enable increased axle weights,” said minister for roads and freight Duncan Gay.
