TrainOSE, the Greek railway passenger operator, controlled, after the 2017 privatisation, by the Italian Ferrovie dello Stato Group, announced that it will present a high-speed train that will reduce travel time between the capital Athens and the city of Thessaloniki, in northern Greece, at 3h 20min, from more than the currently five hours travel between the two cities, the Greek media informs.
Named ”Silver Arrow”, the Frecciargento ETR 485 train was manufactured by Alstom and since 2012 runs on the high-speed rail network in Italy. The train, capable of running at 250 km/h, will be officialy presented at the Thessaloniki International Fair in September.
For the moment, tests with the new train are deployed on the Thessaloniki-Katerini section, following that in 2019, after the electrification of the last section, Tithorea-Lianokladi-Domokos trains should officially be put into commercial operation on the entire Athens-Thessaloniki rail line.
The trains will be equipped with ETCS.
Immediately after the takeover of TrainOSE, Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane announced that it will invest EUR 500 million in rolling stock to be put on the Athens-Thessaloniki rail line, thereby offering a competitive transport between the two cities of Greece.
