Attiko Metro and Alstom signed a contract for the supply of 25 new trams which will serve the entire tramway network in Athens and Piraeus. The contract has a value of EUR 54 million.
The contract includes the design, construction and installation of equipment, factory and commissioning tests for all ordered tramways. In addition, Alstom will also supply the main spare parts and maintenance services.
The new vehicles will enter services including on the extended tram network in Athens’ area, including Piraeus.
The first batch of trams will operate the network by the end of 2019 and the completed delivery is expected in 2020.
The extension of the tramway network follows the route between Νeo Faliro, Downtown area and Piraeus Port, which will have a length of 3.1 km to Piraeus, and 2.3 km from Piraeus. Under the project, 13 tram stations will be constructed, with 7 new stops on the inbound route (Karaiskaki Stadium – M. Asias – Lambraki – Evangelistria – Pl. Deligianni – Dimarchio – Akti Possidonos) and 5 new stops on the outbound route (Ag. Triada – Pl. Ippodamias – 34ou Syntagmatos – Androutsou – Om. Skylitsi).
The project on tramway extension to Piraeus has a value of EUR 61.5 million. construction works were launched in 2014 and will be completed this year.
The project is part of the Regional Operational Programme (ROP) Attiki 2014-2020 and is co-financed through the European Regional Development Fund. The total OP budget is EUR 1.14 billion and the total EU contribution (ERDF and ESF) is EUR 912 million. On transport segment, the OP envisages the development of regional mobility and multi-modal transport connections of the Attica region with ERDF 14.7% of the EU allocation. Along with the development of Piraeus Port and road connections, the programme supports the extension of tram lines within the region. On urban rail transport, the expected impact of the implementation of the programme envisages the construction of 5.5 km of new tram lines.
Last year, the EC announced that, under Cohesion Policy, EUR 58 million are invested in the development of the tramway network in Piraeus, to extend the line from the inner city to the port. The project also includes the construction of the tram stations and the supply of 25 vehicles. As a result, 11,000 more people will be able to use the tram network, which will help reduce traffic congestion in the city.
