PKP Cargo has received a first batch of 44 platform wagons of the Sggrs series under a contract signed with the consortium of Astra Rail Industries and Wagony Świdnica, both part of the Greenbrier for the supply of 220 new Sggrs platform wagons. The remaining vehicles will be supplied by the end of 2022.
The rolling stock procurement is part of the “Multi-system locomotives and wagons intended for intermodal transport” project which has received European financing under the Operational Program Infrastructure and Environment 2014-2020. The EU funds co-financed 50 per cent of the eligible costs.
As part of the same project, PKP Cargo will purchase five Vectron multi-system locomotives expected to be delivered in 2022. These vehicles will make it possible for trains to cross the borders of various countries in Europe without the need to replace locomotives, which will shorten the travel time.
The total value of the “Multi-system locomotives and wagons for intermodal transport” project is over PLN 243 million (EUR 53.66 million), and the EU funding will amount to over PLN 92 million (EUR 20.3 million).
The contract with the consortium of Wagony Świdnica and Astra Rail Industries provides for the delivery of Sggrs series platforms with a total loading length of 80’ enabling the transport of containers in the configuration of 4 x 20′, 2 x 40 ‘and 2 x 30’ with a maximum speed of 120 km/h. All wagons purchased are comply with the Technical Specifications for Interoperability, including the noise specifications, being equipped with braking systems with K-type composite brake blocks. They can be used without any problems in international transport on the standard gauge railway networks.
PKP Cargo is implementing its rolling stock renewal programme. In 2019, the Polish rail operator signed with Tatravagónka a contract for the delivery of 936 platform cars by december 2022.
In total, by the end of 2022, the fleet of the PKP Cargo will increase by 1,156 wagons intended for intermodal transport.
“The investment for the procurement of new vehicles will increase the operational capabilities and competitiveness of PKP Cargo. The potential of the intermodal rail transport market is higher than the current transport services and the high growth in this segment will continue in the coming years. The new wagons and locomotives will enable us to handle much larger flows of loads in domestic and international traffic,” Witold Bawor, the Management Board Member responsible for Operations said.
