Asian rolling stock manufacturers

Two Asian rolling stock manufacturers BEML Ltd from India and SMH Rail from Malaysia signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop new products for rail and metro transport al global level.

The agreement was signed by the Chairman of BEML, Shantanu Roy, and Managing Director of SMH Rail, Datuk P.K. Nara in the presence of Malaysian Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Tengku Zafrul Aziz, during an event in Delhi.

The two companies will focus on marketing, supply, and servicing of rail and metro rolling stock products, with a particular emphasis on markets in Malaysia, Southeast Asia, and Africa.

The MoU will “play an essential role to meet global demand for rolling stock and services which are crucial for a sustainable urban mobility particularly in Malaysia, Southeast Asia, and Africa,” the Chairman of BEML said.

Under the collaboration, the two companies will jointly implement actions, measures and projects to design engineer, manufacture and integrate the new rolling stock. The companies will also work together to develop tailored products and services to meet clients’ specific requirements. Additionally, both companies will excel in sourcing rolling stock aggregates and subsystems, will be involved together in the development of strategies to win procurement processes. In addition, BEML and SMH Rail will exchange technology and know-how on a mutual basis.

This strategic partnership marks a historic collaboration between Asian rolling stock manufacturers to fulfill global demand for railway and metro transport systems, BEML says.

“SMH Rail and BEML will develop new and innovative rolling stock to meet the growing public transport demand in both countries [India and Malaysia] and to deliver products that lead to cost reduction,” Managing Director of SMH Rail said.

BEML is India’s important metro and heavy-train manufacturer and has manufactured and supplied more than 18,000 mainline passenger coaches mainline passenger coaches for long distance routes operated by Indian Railways. In addition, BEML has been manufactured over 900 EMUs to Indian Railways and self-propelled equipment, such as 20 rail buses for public transport, over 40 other maintenance vehicles to Indian Railways.

SMH Rail is a leading rolling stock manufacturing and maintenance company in Malaysia and manufactures urban rail vehicles, as well as rail heavy vehicles for passenger and freight transport.
