With the positioning of the third and last of the steel arched bridges, Webuild has completed the construction operations of the three arch bridges on the Naples-Cancello rail section part of the Naples-Bari high-speed railway line.
Operations have now been completed for the third and last of the steel arched railway bridges, in the municipality of Acerra, thereby avoiding one of the main arteries of the local road network, with a state-of-the-art engineering solution that minimizes impacts on city traffic throughout the construction phase.
The last bridge positioned, just like the other two already placed in their final position in recent months, has a weight of 2,500 tonnes and is about 80 metres long with a height of 21 metres. The bridge was assembled on a specially built forecourt, alongside the operating road network and, with cutting-edge engineering solutions. It was raised about 6 metres from the street level, by means of lifting towers called strand jacks and jack ups. Subsequently, the bridge was taken over by 18 trailers, which distributed the weight on 104 wheeled axes and brought the bridge to its final position on its supports, in about 10 hours.
The construction works for the 15.5 km Naples-Cancello rail section have been launched in September 2020 and are 19% completed. The project includes the construction of three artificial tunnels totalling 3 km and four viaducts with a total length of 4 km. The project on this lot also covers the construction of Naples Afragola stationn and two stops (Casalnuovo and Mall) and a new multi-station Computerized Central Apparatus, with a Central post in Naples. This allows the elimination of the existing 12 level crossings, located along the historical section, with an overall improvement of the area’s viability. The Naples-Afragola station is designed as an interchange point for passengers between regional and high-speed rail services, increasing overall accessibility to rail transport in the Naples junction. EUR 430 million is the total value of the project.
The Naples-Bari railway line will provide transport connection in the South part of Italy and toward the North area. The project is implemented into two sections, the Naples-Cancello and the 18.7 km Apice-Hirpinia connecting Benevento and Avellino.
In June, a Webuild-lead consortium and Rete Ferroviaria Italiana signed the contract for the construction of Orsara – Bovino section on the Naples-Bari HSR.
