Local authorities in Arad (Romania) have secured necessary funds to finance the procurement of ten new trams. It concerns the procurement of four double-articulated trams of high capacity and six medium-capacity trams. The cost of the procurement contract is RON 87.4 million (EUR 18.7 million), of which Arad municipality’s co-financing will amount to RON 1.75 million (EUR 375,000).
“In Romania’s Western Region, we are the municipality with the biggest public transport project which managed to get European funds. We have received the documentation approving the European financing. We are talking about EUR 16 million to be invested in the acquisition of ten new modern trams. We also want to get European funds, but also public funds, to buy all the 28 new trams for Arad’s public transport by 2022”, declared Mayor Gheorghe Falca.
The ten new trams will be operated by Arad Public Transport Company and will add to the 6 new Imperio trams, manufactured by Astra Vagoane Calatori Arad a few years ago. Moreover, Arad Municipality also plans to rehabilitate 20 older trams of the current fleet of Arad Public Transport Company, so that in 2020 the city will have a modern fleet of trams.
The project initiated by the municipality consists of the procurement of 28 trams by 2022. The acquisition costs have been estimated at EUR 58 million (RON 270.7 million).
