Arad buys 28 new trams

Romanian city Arad will procure 28 new trams. The investment is expected to amount to EUR 57 million. The announcement was made by Mayor Gheorghe Falca. According to him, apart from the procurement of the 28 new trams, the Municipality of Arad also plans to upgrade 20 trams of the existing fleet.
“The feasibility study for the procurement of 28 new trams, estimated at EUR 57 million, VAT included, and the modernisation of 20 trams of the Public Transport Company’s fleet, estimated at around EUR 4.7 million, has been concluded”, declared Gheorghe Falca.
According to the Mayor of Arad, 10 double-articulated trams will be procured. The price of one unit is estimated at EUR 2.2 million. Also, 18 medium-capacity trams will be procured at an estimated price of EUR 1.7 million per unit. 17 GT6 tram cars will be upgraded at a cost of EUR 223,000 per unit and three GT8 tram cars at a cost of EUR 308,000 per unit.
The duration of the contract is 48 months. “After approving this feasibility study, we will initiate the tender procedure”, added the Mayor.
Currently, Arad Public Transport Company uses 138 trams for passenger public transport. The current rolling stock fleet includes mostly second-hand trams and only 6 new trams bought by Arad Municipality in 2014 and 2015. These new trams were manufactured by Romanian rolling stock manufacturer, Astra Vagoane Calatori.
