Craiova city, southern Romania, has developed a project for the purchase of 17 new 25m trams worth RON 40.5 million lei (EUR 8.7 million), including VAT. The acquisition of new trams will be carried out through the 2014-2020 Regional Operational Program.
The project will be submitted to the Local Council of Craiova at a meeting today, July 26, and its own contribution to the municipality of Craiova project is 2% of the eligible value of all activities, amounting to RON 810.180 (EUR 175.000), representing co-financing the project.
According to the draft decision posted on Craiova City Hall website, the number and size of the trams resulted from the opportunity study on the renewal of the urban public transport fleet for Craiova – ”The acquisition of new buses and the new tram purchase” – approved in June 2018.
The project for the acquisition of the 17 trams for Craiova is carried out in partnership with the Romanian Ministry of Regional Development and Public Administration, with the support of JASPERS and aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in county-based municipalities through investments based on sustainable urban mobility plans.
”Taking into consideration the necessity to renew the public transport fleet in Romania as a measure for improving urban mobility and limiting CO2 emissions, the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Administration in partnership with the cities or municipalities, draws up the project ‘Acquisition of public transport vehicles – trams”, submitted within the framework of the Regional Operational Program 2014-2020, Priority Axis 4 – Support of sustainable urban development, Priority 4, Specific objective 4.1 – Reduction of carbon emissions in county-based municipalities through investments based on sustainable urban mobility plans”, says the draft decision issued by the Local Council in Craiova.
Regarding the electric transport, RAT Craiova (the public transport operator) owns a fleet of 29 trams running on 3 routes. According to the information provided by the operator of public transport service in Craiova, the estimated number of passengers who used public transport by tram in 2017 was about 3.47 million passengers.
