Angel Trains enters Scottish hydrogen train partnership

hydrogen powered trainAngel Trains joined the consortium working on the Scottish hydrogen train project to deliver Scotland’s the first hydrogen powered train to offer a zero-carbon alternative to the country’s rail network.

“We are proud to be partnering with Arcola Energy and the industry consortium to offer our technical support and expertise on this ambitious project,” , Matthew Labuda, the Head of Angel Trains Customer Service, North, said.

The consortium comprises Arcola Energy, Transport Scotland, Scottish Enterprise and University of St Andrews.

Under the project, the partners will convert a Scotrail Class 314 locomotive into a hydrogen vehicle and will serve as a pilot vehicle for the development of the new trains.

In March, the Scottish Government announced it will invest GBP 7 million (EUR 8.1 million) to support zero emission mobility across two innovation projects. The Locate facility, which will be based at the Michelin Scotland Innovation Parc (MSIP) site in Dundee, will shortly receive GBP 4 million (EUR 4.64 million) to support heavy duty vehicle platform testing and innovation, particularly around hydrogen fuel cell and battery electric powertrains. This project is being developed by the Scottish Government in partnership with the Power Networks Demonstration Centre and the Hydrogen Accelerator at the University of St Andrews.

The hydrogen accelerator’s focus on zero emission mobility is to stimulate innovation, supply chain developments.

GBP 3 million (EUR 3.48 million) will be delivered to the Power Networks Demonstration Centre, part of the University of Strathclyde, to focus on the decarbonisation of heavy duty vehicles through battery electrification and charging technology.

Both facilities are closely related, working in partnership to help lay the foundations for a wider ecosystem of innovation infrastructure. The complementary facilities have the potential to support other recent initiatives such as the hydrogen powered train. These facilities will support Scotland’s industrial base for heavy-duty vehicles in the marine, aerospace, off-highway, road and rail sectors.
