Alstom to supply Mumbai 31 metro trains

Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRC) awarded Alstom a contract for the supply of 31 eight-car trains (248 coaches) with a width of 3.2m. They will be put into operation on Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ metro line (Corridor 3). It will have a length of 33.5 km with 27 stations, of which 26 will be underground.
MMRC said that Alstom’s offer is the most competitive amongst the respective pre-qualified bidders. The contract has been granted after receiving clearance from JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) as per procurement norms.
The 180m train with a longitudinal seating arrangement, will have a capacity of 2.350 passengers carrying capacity, with a capacity of 300 passengers for each car.
The car-body material will be of stainless steel. Every car will have 4 doors on each side.
The new trains will have LED lighting, 75% of motorization for energy efficiency and better acceleration, large LED screen for passengers’ information and digital route map display and will be equipped with CCTV surveillance system.
“With the award of this contract we have achieved an important milestone in this project. To cater the heavy passenger traffic and to improve frequency of trains, the state-of-art rolling stock will be also equipped with Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) System having features of Driverless Train Operations,” MMRC says.
All 248 coaches to be manufactured in India under “Make in India” policy.
