NS, the Dutch rail operator announced that its entire electric train fleet will run on 100% renewable wind power. By the end of 2017, all company’s trains will be completely powered by renewable energy sources, such as wind power.
NS collaborated with energy company Eneco to reduce emissions, under a 10 years contract. “The early achievement is primarily due to the completion of several wind farm projects in the Netherlands, Belgium and Finland.”
The transition of the trains in the country to 100% renewable was initially planned to be achieved by 2018. The early achievement is primarily due to the completion of several wind farm projects in the Netherlands, Belgium and Finland.
The train network in Netherlands alone will require 1.2 billionkWh of electricity per year. The total electricity contract is for 1.4 TWh per year, 0.2 of which is earmarked for other rail carriers and 1.2 for NS.
As anticipated by renewable energy advocates, the latest step will help reduce the environmental footprint of the rail network in the country.
