AECOM to lead East San Fernando Valley Light Rail design

AECOM has been selected as the lead designer for Phase 2 of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (Metro) East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit Project. Under the San Fernando Transit Constructors (SFTC) joint venture, AECOM will advance the final design for the 6.7-mile extension, which includes at-grade tracks and 11 new stations, enhancing public transport connectivity in the San Fernando Valley.

“We are proud to support this landmark project, which will meet growing demands for public transit in the region,” said Matt Crane, chief executive of AECOM’s U.S. West region. “For over a decade, our transportation experts have played a critical role in delivering Southern California’s ambitious transit objectives. That experience prepares our teams to provide innovative engineering solutions that boost connectivity and improve the quality of life for the communities we serve.”

As the lead designer, AECOM will oversee design integration for multiple project elements. All components will be developed using Building Information Modelling (BIM) to enhance efficiency and detect potential design conflicts. AECOM’s BIM approach, supported by its digital delivery specialists, will facilitate better decision-making throughout the project. Once complete, the new light rail line will integrate with regional transport services, including Metrolink, Amtrak, the Metro G Line, Metro B Line, and other planned Metro projects.

“We are excited to partner with San Fernando Transit Constructors and Metro on this important project to provide new transportation options for communities across the San Fernando Valley,” said Andrew Liu, regional business line leader for U.S. West Transportation. “As the industry’s top rail and mass transit firm, our teams have delivered some of the world’s most ambitious urban mobility projects, and we look forward to deploying that global experience to enhance one of the Valley’s busiest travel corridors.”

The project will also include significant street improvements to enhance safety and accessibility, as well as a new 22-acre maintenance and storage facility. Several buildings within the facility will feature solar power systems with surplus energy storage capacity.

Metro’s USD 3.57 billion East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Project is expected to provide vital new connections across the region, particularly benefiting residents in Van Nuys, Panorama City, Arleta, and Pacoima—many of whom rely on public transport. The line is scheduled to open in 2031.
