Additional Impuls 2 trains to SKM

Impuls 2 EMUs Szybka Kolej Miejska (SKM), the rail operator in Warsaw metropolitan area, has received two additional Impuls 2 EMUs manufactured by Newag which will join the existing four 4-car new train fleet.

These new electric multiple units will enter train tests and in May SKM will start technical acceptance process which will allow trains to enter operation on the S1 Line.

Passengers will benefit increased number of seats with trains providing more than 1,600 passenger capacity, about 60% more than the Elf EMUs and the Impuls EMUs currently used by the SKM. Each train is air-conditioned and fully adapted to the needs of persons with reduced mobility, parents travelling with children in prams and passengers with bicycles. The trains are equipped with USB chargers, electric sockets, ticket machines, a modern passenger information system and a life-saving AED defibrillators.

The first Impuls 2 EMUs were presented in February in Warsaw and entered passenger services on the S2 Line connecting Warsaw Chopin Airport and Warszawa Wschodnia (Warsaw East) train station.  The new electric multiple units have already travelled in total 10,000 km and carried 360,000 passengers on the S2 Line which represents a 63% increase compared to the previous year.

The trains will be operated in a so-called double trainset during peak hours, which means that the two vehicles will be coupled together. This solution will improve the quality of travel for the inhabitants of the Warsaw agglomeration and encourage them to give up commuting by car in favour of eco-friendly railways.

Szybka Kolej Miejska and Newag signed a PLN 668 million (EUR 141.36 million) contract for the supply of 21 Impuls 2 electric multiple units manufactured at the plant in Nowy Sącz. The contract has received a European co-financing of PLN 203 million (EUR 42.96 million) from the Infrastructure and Environment for 2014–2020 Operational Programme. The contract also includes the provision of maintenance services for 7 years and the training of employees in the field of train service. All the new trains will be delivered by the end of 2022.
