The capital of Ethiopia Addis Ababa officially opened the first light rail network in Sub-Saharan Africa, after several months of tests.
The 34 km two-lines and 39 stations were built by China Railway Engineering Corp. With total cost of USD 740 million, the project was largely funded by China. CNR Changchun delivered the tramways at a cost of USD 475 million, of which 85% was financed by Export-Import Bank of China.
For the telecommunications and fare collection systems, Huawei provided the solutions.
The construction on this light rail network began in 2011.
