The Cabinet of Panama has approved the construction of a 2 km extension of Panama Metro Line 2, connecting the Specialized Higher Technical Institute (ITSE) and the Tocumen International Airport.
The approved project has a cost of USD 42.7 million. The Cabinet has also authorised the contract between the Metro de Panamá and Grupo de Empresas (GdE) for the design, supply, installation and testing of the system integration of the extension.
The GdE consortium comprises Alstom (the leader), Thales, Sofratesa, CIM (Compagnie Internacionale de Maintenance) and TSO, which also has delivered the integral railway system for the partial service of the Panama Metro Line 2.
The 2-km extension is expected to be completed in February or March 2022, when the Panama City will host the Central American and Caribbean Games (it will take place in during April and May).
In 2018, Metro de Panamá has announced that Línea 2 Ramal Consortium submitted the best bid for the Line 2 extension.
In 2019, the president of Panama has inaugurated the 21-km metro Line 2, served by 16 stations.
In the same time, the ministers of the State gave green light to a USD 1.5 million contract on preventive and corrective maintenance of the telecommunications system on the metro Line 1. It includes the maintenance of the ATS, telephony and intercom subsystems, CCTV, TETRA radio, passenger information system, fiber optic network and SCADA. The contract was awarded to a consortium of Thales SIX GTS France SAS/ Sofratesa de Panamá.
