Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) has unveiled the shortlisted companies to design and construct the Botany rail duplication and Cabramatta Loop projects. Three contractors have been shortlisted to bid for the Botany duplication project including CPB Contractors, Laing O’Rourke and John Holland. Downer EDI, Fulton Hogan, and John Holland have been shortlisted to bid for the Cabramatta Loop Project.
The tender process for both projects will be undertaken in 2020.
Botany rail duplication project will see a 3 km double track line predominantly within the rail corridor, track realignment and upgrading of some existing sections to improve the alignment of both tracks and minimise impacts to adjoining land uses. The project also includes four new rail crossovers, constructing new bridge structures at Mill Stream, Southern Cross Drive, O’Riordan Street and Robey Street and re-constructing the existing bridge structures at Robey Street and O’Riordan Street.
The Cabramatta Loop project includes the construction of a new track approximately 1.3 km long between Cabramatta and Warwick Farm, enabling trains to simultaneously pass each other through the ‘loop track’ from both directions. This track will run parallel to and form part of the southern Sydney freight line. Under the project, two new rail bridges will be constructed. The project will allow heavier and longer trains, of up to 1,300 metres.
The two projects will provide the capacity to meet future growth in the transport of containerised freight between Port Botany and metropolitan freight intermodal terminals.
“Improving freight performance at Port Botany is critical for the economic growth and prosperity of Sydney, NSW and Australia with the amount of container freight handled by the Port set to significantly increase by 77 per cent to 25.5 million tonnes by 2036,” ARTC CEO, John Fullerton said.
