Croatia’s railway infrastructure manager, HŽ Infrastruktura, and the consortium of Comsa – Comsa Instalaciones Y Sistemas Industriales, signed the contract for the modernisation and electrification of the Vinkovci – Vukovar line.
The EUR 69.5 million (HRK 516.3 million) contract envisages the modernisation and electrification of the 18.7 km line will enable an increase of the volume of the rail transport and transshipment operations in the Port of Vukovar and better connection of the rail passenger transport of the Vukovar-Srijem County with the main traffic corridors and other counties.
The project comprises the entire reconstruction and renewal of the existing single-track railway line, the renewal of rail stations Vukovar-Borovo naselje and Vukovar and stops Nuštar and Bršadin-Lipovača, and will include the performance of all necessary works on the civil-engineering, control-command, signaling and interlocking and power subsystems.
“The modernization and electrification of the section between Vinkovci and Vukovar is a challenge for Comsa. We are convinced that our extensive experience in the infrastructure sector and cooperation with local construction companies will make this project a success,” said Tomislav Hannich, the representative of Comsa.
In March 2019, HŽ Infrastruktura and the Bulgarian consortium of Rubicon Engineering and SPC Engineering signed a EUR 1.4 million (HRK 10.26 million) works’ supervision contract.
“The reconstruction of the Vinkovci – Vukovar railway will create the preconditions for better connectivity and further economic development of Eastern Croatia, since without good transport connections there is no development of economic activities. This project is part of the reconstruction program for the utility and electricity infrastructure of the city of Vukovar, worth almost one and a half kunas, which we plan to invest in Vukovar over the next two years,”said Oleg Butković, the Minister of Transport.
Vinkovci – Vukovar will be adapted for the maximum train speed of 120 km/h, which will shorten the journey by 50 percent, so the journey in passenger transport will take 20 minutes and in the freight transport 30 minutes.
The electrification of the section will enable an economically and energetically more profitable, and an environmentally sustainable rail transport. The rail section capacity will be enhanced and the access to the Port of Vukovar will be improved. Being situated on the TEN-T Corridor Rhine-Danube, in this way the port will have a quality connection with the Corridor RH1, the former Paneuropean Corridor X. Modernization of the railway line Vinkovci – Vukovar will contribute to the economic development of the local community and recovery of the eastern part of Slavonia.
The Grant Agreement for modernization of this rail section in the total value of HRK 677.7 million (EUR 91.22 million) and eligible costs in the amount of HRK 516.3 million (EUR 69.5 million) was signed in May 2018 by the Ministry of Transport, Central Finance and Contracting Agency, and HŽ Infrastruktura. The Project is co-financed by the European Union from the Operational programme “Competitiveness and Cohesion”, Cohesion fund with 85 percent and by Government of the Republic of Croatia with 15 percent.
