The Government of Ontario has cancellated the procurement for the Hamilton LRT project. The Infrastructure Ontario has notified the proponent teams who were bidding on the project. They will receive a stipend according to their involvement in the procurement process. IO and Metrolinx will be meeting with teams in the coming days to discuss next steps.
According to a report, the project would cost 5 times what previous government estimated. The Ontario government has cancelled the CAD 1 billion (USD 759.9 million) funding for the LRT project which is estimated at CAD 5.5 billion (USD 4.2 billion).
In 2018, a RFP was issued to three shortlisted teams to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the Hamilton Light Rail Transit (LRT) project.
CityLine Transit Group, Ei8ht Transit and Mobilinx are the three shortlisted consortia for Hamilton LRT project. The selection of the preferred proponent was expected for 2019.
The construction works were anticipated to start in 2019, with an estimated completion date of 2024.
The Hamilton LRT envisages the construction of a 14 km line from McMaster University through downtown Hamilton to Eastgate Square, from the west end of the city to the east. 17 stops with connections to the bus network and the GO Transit network will be constructed along the line.
