Tender begins for Albania’s most important rail project

Albanian Railways has launched the invitation for tenders for the rehabilitation of Durrës – Tirana Public Transport Terminal (PTT) railway line and the construction of the rail link to Tirana Airport. The contract envisages the design and build of the 39 km of railway infrastructure, including the signalling and communication system.
The tender will be organised under a two-stage procedure, with the first one consisting of a technical proposal only and the second one is an updated technical tender incorporating all changes required by the railway company.
The tenders for the first stage must be submitted by January 15, 2020.
Under the contract, rehabilitation works will be performed on the 34-km railway line between Durrës and Tirana, and the construction of a 5-km rail section from the capital to the airport. The project also includes the modernisation of the 5 existing stations and the construction of a new one at Tirana Public Transport Terminal.
For the implementation of the EUR 92 million project, the Western Balkan Investment Fund provided EUR 38 million and the EBRD, EUR 36.9 million, with a EUR 16 million coming from the Albanian government.
The Tirana – Durrës line is designed for passenger and freight traffic and is currently the busiest section of the Albanian railway network, being operated by 4 pairs of trains daily.
The Tirana – Durrës line is the northern part of Tirana – Durres – Elbasan – Pogradec mainline, which forms the TEN-T Corridor VIII on Albanian territory.
After the completion of the project, the trains will be able to run at speeds of 100 km/h.
