Norway awards Bergen-Fløen design contract

Bane NOR, the Norwegian infrastructure manager, and Cowi signed a design contract for a new double track on the Bergen-Fløen rail section, including the construction of a freight terminal in Nygårdstangen.
The Bergen-Fløen section is 1.3 km long but it is a challenging project as during construction works, the train traffic will not be closed.
The contract includes the preparation of a detailed and construction plan which includes technical aspects, such as tracks, contact line, signalling systems, but also water management, geotechnics and environmental issues.
Cowi will use the BIM model which will improve the design work, eliminate project collision risks and will integrate all aspects of the project, minimizing the delays.
The construction of the double track and the freight terminal will increase transport capacity by 50% on Bergensbanen.
The contract is part of the Arna – Bergen project which includes the construction of the double track line split into two sections: Arna-Fløen and Bergen-Fløen. The project also includes the construction of the 7.8-km double track Ulriken tunnel.
The project will be completed in 2024.
