PKP Intercity has ordered 10 additional Griffin locomotives from Newag, valuated at PLN 183.8 million (EUR 42 million). The new vehicles will be delivered within 30 months.
This is an exercised option under the PLN 367.6 million (EUR 83.9 million) contract signed in May 2018, for 20 locomotives. With this order, the contract now reach a total value of PLN 551.4 million (EUR 125.8 million).
Under the contract, Newag will provide vehicle maintenance services, warranty services for the repair of locomotives and will train the staff.
The new vehicles will be capable for speeds of 160 km/h and they will serve the modernised railway network across the country, including the Przemyśl – Lublin – Warsaw – Bydgoszcz – Gdynia / Piła – Kołobrzeg route and Suwałki – Białystok / Lublin – Warsaw – Poznań – Szczecin / Gorzów Wielkopolski / Zielona Góra line.
“The modern locomotives will run on many popular routes throughout the country. We are providing more and more Polish residents with access to comfortable long-distance connections offered by PKP Intercity,” Andrzej Bittel, the Secretary of State at the Ministry of Infrastructure, said.
Until 2023, PKP Intercity implements the renewal of its rolling stock fleet.
Griffin is a universal family of four-axle locomotives designed for pulling freight and passenger trains. They are characterized by a high reliability and extended servicing intervals, resulting in a high availability rate. Griffin is the first Polish multisystem locomotive adapted to be used both with the 3kV direct current power supply system and 15kV or 25kV alternating current power supply systems.
