Full test cycle completed for Russian next generation locomotives

Transmashholding has announced that Russian first main freight AC electric locomotives with domestic asynchronous traction drive system  completed the full test cycle. Locomotives’ certificates are expected to be issued in October.
The trials were conducted with the 2ES5S and 3ES5S AC electric freight locomotives, which can meet heavy-haul freight traction demand in Russia.
In January, the 2ES5S locomotive, manufactured by Novocherkassk Electric Locomotive Plant, has successfully completed its 5000 km test run at Railway Research Institute (VNIIZHT), in Scherbinka. During the run, the locomotive confirmed its full compliance with technical requirements. This included verification of the traction system characteristics at speeds of 0 to 120 km\h carrying a rake weighing 6900 tonnes. The operational trials were conducted on the East-Siberian Railway and Taishet-Taksimo section, with a rake of 6500 tonnes. The freight electric locomotive with asynchronous traction class 2ES5S is a new iteration of class 2ES5, developed by Transmashholding together with Alstom.
In June 2019, the 3ES5S AC electric freight locomotive, manufactured at the Novocherkassk Electric Locomotive Plant has also completed the 5,000-km test at the Railway Research Institute. The operation of the traction system at speeds to 120 km/h under a load of 5,400 tonnes was tested. The 3ES5S freight locomotive is a three-section version of the 2ES5S locomotive. Designed to haul 7,100 tonnes, the locomotive can run at speeds of 120 km/h.
The two locomotives use 85% of local components including a traction converter, auxiliary drive, traction asynchronous electric motors, a traction transformer and control system equipment. For the production of the locomotives with asynchronous traction, a whole range of new technical, ergonomic, and environmental solutions have been used, which reduce maintenance costs, increase overhaul runs and also save energy.
The electric locomotives are designed to operate on railways with a complex profile in severe climatic conditions of the Baikal-Amur and the Trans-Siberian railway lines.
