Contracts signed to modernise 100 km line in Silesia Province

PKP Polish Railway Lines signed two contracts for design and construction works on 100-km rail on route No. 131 Węglówki, on Kalina – Rusiec Łódzki – Zduńska Wola Karsznice line. The section is running between Śląskie and Łódź voivodships, on C-E 65 railway mainline. The total value of the contracts is PLN 1.8 billion (EUR 410 million).
The modernisation of Węglówka line will improve passenger transport services and will significantly increase the rail freight transport capacity between Silesia and the Tri-City ports (Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot).
The contracts include two lots:
For Lot C, a EUR 282 million (PLN 1.24 billion) contract was signed with a consortium lead by Porr. Expected to be completed within 44 months, the contract envisages design and construction works on Kalina – Rusiec Łódzki section;
For Lot D, the EUR 132.67 million (PLN 582.7 million) contract was signed with ZUE Spółka Akcyjna. The contract is expected to be completed within 41 months and includes design and construction works for the Rusiec Łódzki – Zduńska Wola Karsznice section.
“The modernization of Węglówka is an important investment under the National Railway Programme, which will significantly increase the possibilities of the railway network in terms of freight transport. On this route, access comfort and passenger service will also improve,” said Andrzej Bittel, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Infrastructure.
Under the project, 170 km of tracks will be modernised on the Kalina – Rusiec Łódzki – Zduńska Wola Karsznice section, 238 switches will be replaced, while 200 km of traction network will be reconstructed. The rail bridges and viaducts will be better adapted for longer and heavier freight trains. In total, 77 engineering objects, including 13 bridges and 15 viaducts, will be modernised, along with 53 level crossings. In addition 8 stations and stops will be improved and adapted for people with reduced mobility. as part of the project, two local traffic control centers will be built in Herby Nowe (situated in Upper Silesian industrial area, along the Coal Trunk-Line) and Zduńska Wola (in Łódź Province). They will be equipped with modern computer systems and equipment which will support the railway traffic on the 100-km modernised rail section.
The project is part of “The work of the C-E 65 railway section. Chorzów Batory – Karsznice – Tarnowskie Góry – Bydgoszcz – Inowrocław – Maksymilianowo” project, which is 85% funded through the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment 2014–2020.
