The new trains for Berlin S-Bahn, manufactured by Siemens Mobility and Stadler started their first test runs.
On September 11, the new 483/484 class train started its trials from S-Bahn’s depot in Grünau, in Köpenick District. Every night the train will be out testing on the 327-km network.
The tests will include checking if the train control system is working properly in the network, analyzing the train’s handling, testing ride comfort in the train’s future home ground.
At the same time, six trainers of future locomotive drivers for this new class also began their own training course.
The first train arrived at the Schöneweide S-Bahn depot in June and underwent extensive functional tests of its various components, including brakes, car doors, heating and air conditioning systems, windscreen wipers, lights, train control system, general handling and much more.
Previously, the train had to pass numerous rigorous tests at the SiemensTest and Validation Center in Wegberg-Wildenrath,in the state of North-Rhine Westphalia,such astype tests for derailment safety and brake tests for measuring braking distances. All ten of the pre-series trains must complete a total of 160,000 test kilometers before they enter passenger service in January 2021, on Berlin’s Ring/Southeast network.
The remaining 96 trains will be delivered by the end of 2023 and serve passengers on the Ringbahn (Lines S41 and S42) and on Lines S45, S46 and S47.
In 2015, S-Bahn Berlin GmbH signed a contract with Stadler Pankow and Siemens for the delivery of up to 1,380 vehicles. A firm order was placed for the first 106 trains with a total of 382 cars. The 85 four-car trains and an additional 21 two-car trains will operate the Ringbahn lines (S 41 and S 42) as well as on the system’s southeastern feeder lines S 47, S 46 and S 8.
S-Bahn Berlin is investing about EUR 900 million in new vehicles and the necessary adaptation of its workshop in Grünau.
