Metrolinx, the regional operator for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), ordered from Bombardier Transportation 36 additional BiLevel cars which will be manufactured at Bombardier’s Thunder Bay plant.
The new cars will enter services on the GO Transit network in Toronto.
The agreement will enable Metrolinx to add 31 standard and 5 accessible cars to its existing order, which will provide more than 6,000 additional seats.
The new cars include Bombardier’s Orbita system that will allow Metrolinx staff to see real-time performance data and pinpoint issues relating to things like doors, the HVAC system, and electrical equipment, to give commuters a better, safer journey.
“Buying more GO Transit BiLevel vehicles is important as we continue to rapidly increase service. Our government is committed to building the transportation network Ontario needs, while supporting good jobs,” Caroline Mulroney, the Minister of Transport, said.
In 2016, the two companies signed a USD 328 million contract for the supply of 125 next-generation BiLevel commuter rail cars, with the final delivery expected in Q1, 2020.
The BiLevel cars feature upgrades to door and air conditioning systems, increases in energy efficiency, and enhancements to amenities that make the passenger experience even better.
