The EUR 600 million railway access projects at Gdańsk and Gdynia ports have started, with reconstruction works being implemented in the area of Gdańsk Zaspa Towarowa freight station.
In July, Polish railway infrastructure manager awarded three contracts for improvement works at the two important country’s ports.
Torpol – Intercor consortium, which won two rail access projects at Gdańsk, currently collects the materials needed to build the track.
The project on improving the infrastructure of rail access to the port of Gdańsk includes reconstruction of over 70 km of tracks, 13 level crossings and pedestrian crossings, and replacement of 221 turnouts. The project also envisages the modernisation of three stations, including their control centers (at Gdańsk Port Północny, Gdańsk Kaszubski Canal and Gdańsk Zaspa Towarowa stations) and electrification works. In addition, three bridges, two viaducts, and 18 culverts will be rebuilt and a new viaduct with road access will be built over the tracks at Gdańsk Kaszubski Canal station.
The works at Gdynia Port will improve its capacity and will shorten the travel time. 115 km of tracks will be reconstructed, 356 turnouts will be installed, and electrification works will be performed at the port. 13 km of roads, a railway bridge and two level crossings will be also reconstructed. The EUR 361 million contract was won by Budimex.
The two major projects will allow heavier and longer trains to and from ports, significantly improving rail freight transport services. The total value of the projects is PLN 2.6 billion (EUR 600 million), of which 40% is covered by the EU through the CEF.
The projects are expected to be completed at the end of 2021.
