The Swiss-Moroccan rail cooperation will intensify. Swiss federal councillor Simonetta Sommaruga and Moroccan Transport Minister Abdelkader Amara have recently signed a declaration of intent.

The document was signed during a train journey to Erstfeld.

Morocco is developing its high-speed railway network. On the other hand, Switzerland has significant experience in planning, financing and building transport infrastructure, said Switzerland’s Federal Transportation Department (DETEC) in a press release after the meeting of the two officials. Last but not least, the Swiss companies are leaders in the construction of tunnels.

“Saint-Gothard Tunnel proves this: we have a vast experience in major transport projects. I am delighted to be able to boost trade with Morocco!”, wrote Sommaruga on Twitter.

Last week, the Moroccan officials visited Ceneri Tunnel. On the North-African coast, the first high-speed railway between Tangier and Casablanca was inaugurated in 2018 thus reducing the travel time from five hours to just two hours.

For the 2040 horizon, Morocco plans to extend this line up to Marrakech et Agadir and to build another railway between Rabat and Oujda.
