Ottawa Government allocates CAD 7.4 million (USD 5.5 million) to a feasibility study in Canada for the extension of Dolbeau – Mistassini existing railway up to Baie-Comeau railway and maritime terminal.
This extension will allow Canadian companies to have access to a maritime port to export food, fertilizers, forestry, refined hydrocarbons and chemicals.
The announcement was made in Baie-Comeau by Federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau.
“The initial phase of the project consists of bulk and liquid freight transport for an estimated number of 800 cars a day. This investment will have significant economic benefits for the country and will create 105 direct and indirect jobs during the development phase of the study”, declared the Canadian minister.
He is trying to open new markets to help shippers to strengthen their presence and to capitalise the new opportunities created by trade agreements. “The United States is Canada’s main trade partner with trade worth CAD 741.4 billion (around USD 557 billion). International trade is on the rise. From 2015 to 2018, trade with Asia increased by 18.9% up to CAD 199.2 billion (USD 150 billion) and that with the European Union increased by 19% since 2015 up to CAD 118.1 billion (USD 89 billion) in 2018, added Garneau.
