Funding provided for Gold Coast LRT extension

Queensland government has announced a AUD 351 million (USD 238.3 million) commitment for Gold Coast Light Rail stage 3A.
Under the project, 7-km of new LRT and 8 new stations will be constructed from Broadbeach South to Burleigh Heads.
This amount represents half of the total cost of the AUD 709 million (USD 482.85 million) stage. Currently the AUD 112 million (USD 76.27 million), or 16 per cent, the Federal Government has committed falls well short of a fair funding agreement and is just not good enough for the people of Gold Coast,” Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said.
Queensland government asked Federal Government to provide AUD 269 million (USD 183.2 million) for this stage, which is the same proportion funding arrangement, representing 38 per cent it had invested in Stage 1.
“If we get shovels in the ground as soon as possible it will take around 3 years to build Stage 3A, with the possibility of trams operating to Burleigh Heads in 2023,” the Premier said.
The preliminary business case for Gold Coast LRT stage 3A was completed by the City in December 2017.
The City Transport Strategy 2031 proposes further extensions of the Gold Coast Light Rail once Stage 3 to Coolangatta is completed. These will include other four extensions of the network.
