Russian Railways intends to purchase 1,379 locomotives until 2020, valuated at RUB 194.7 billion (USD 3 billion).
The CEO of Russian Railways, Oleg Belozerov, has announced that this year, the company plans to acquire 709 locomotives worth RUB 92.5 billion (USD 1.45 billion). Under the fleet renewal programme, in 2020, the company will purchase another 670 units, valuated at RUB 102.2 billion (USD 1.6 billion).
The company needs vehicles with improved consumer qualities and digital solutions for both its operation and maintenance. As RZD wants a transition to digital railways, it will procure smart locomotives which should be equipped with modern technologies that will allow driverless operation and fully digital control for vehicles’ life-cycle processes.
In May, RZD has announced its intension to purchase 1000 new electric locomotives over the next three years, valuated at EUR 2 billion. the project is part of company’s wider electrification and reduction of emissions strategy.
In the last 10 years, Russian Railways ordered 5,000 locomotives to improve the quality of services.
