The U.S. Federal Transit Administration announced a USD 300 million federal funding for three rail transit projects in Arizona, California, and Washington. Funding is provided through FTA’s Capital Investment Grants (CIG) Programme.
“These federal grants to Arizona, California and Washington will improve mobility and the quality of life for those who depend on public transit every day,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said.
USD 100 million will be allotted to the South Central Light Rail Extension in Phoenix, Arizona. This project is a 9-km light rail extension from downtown Phoenix to the South Mountain Village Core and includes 9 stations.
The Westside metro section 3 project in Los Angeles, California, is another rail transit project which will receive federal funding. Upon final FTA approval of a construction grant agreement, the project will receive USD 100 million in previously approved FY 2018 CIG funds as well as USD 100 million in FY 2019 CIG funds. The Purple Line extension project consists of the construction of a 4-km extension from the future Century City station to the Westwood/Veterans Hospital area, and includes 2 stations.
The 12.5-km LRT extension in Seattle will also receive a USD 100 million federal funding. The section will be constructed from the Angle Lake station through the cities of SeaTac, Des Moines, Kent, and Federal Way, and includes 3 stations.
