Ronald Pofalla, DB Board Member for Infrastructure, and Berlin Mayor, Michael Müller, signed, at the Wernerwerk station, the financing contract for the reactivation of the Siemensbahn connecting Siemensstadt 2 with city’s central station.
The Jungfernheide – Gartenfeld 4.5 km line, built by Siemens, was opened in 1929 and operated until 1980 when it as closed.
The project envisages laying 10-km of new tracks, the construction of signalling system at Jungfernheide station, where a connection section to the Berlin S-Bahn Ring will be constructed, the modernisation of an 800-m existing viaduct, the reactivation of Wernerwerk, Siemensstadt and Gartenfeld stations, the construction of at least two 150-m bridges.
The total value of the project is EUR 2.3 million with early planning services being funded by Berlin city. The feasibility study will analyze the options for extending the S-Bahn route beyond Gartenfeld.
The reconstruction of the Siemensbahn is one of the nine i2030 development programme which will be implemented by the states of Berlin and Brandenburg, together with Deutsche Bahn.
The line will serve Siemens’ EUR 600 million Siemensstadt 2, a manufacturing, researching, learning, and residential project, its biggest single investment ever in the company’s history in Berlin. This project, which covers an area of 70 hectares, aims to transform this large industrial area into a modern, urban district of the future for a diverse range of purposes.
In 2018, Siemens and Berlin’s Mayor signed an agreement on Siemensstadt 2.0 project.
