Moscow opens 10-km extension of Line 1

On 20 June, Moscow Metro has opened the 10-km extension of Line 1 (Sokolnicheskaya Line), from Salaryevo to Kommunarka, which includes four stations. The new section will be operated by 12 Moskva trains and before October, 15 more trains will be introduced.
The opening of Sokolnicheskaya metro line extension to Kommunarka “will largely solve [transport] the problem. he second stage is the construction of a Big Circle Line, a new line to Kommunarka and Troitsk,” Sergei Sobyanin, Moscow Mayor said at the opening ceremony.
For the first time, the metro line runs in cross section of Solntsevo – Butovo – Varshavskoye Motorway. The first in Moscow combined car and metro 2 km long tunnel has been built at the intersection with Kaluzhskoye Motorway. “This line’s technology is unique for Moscow, as the metro runs in the cross section of the first-class highways. Besides, we have built this section really fast, that is, in about two years, all those highways, overpasses, tunnels, metro. This project has largely transformed New Moscow area,” said Sobyanin.
Thanks to the new section, passengers will save up to 40 minutes a day on trips around the city, as it significantly improves transport connections for citizens working in Moskovsky and Sosensky settlements.
After the opening of the Salaryevo – Kommunarka section the traffic on other lines will be relieved: by 14% at Salaryevo station, by 17% at Teply Stan station, by 12% at Rasskazovka station and 15% at Buninskaya Alleya station. In addition, the rush-hour traffic on Moscow Kaluzhskoye and Kievskoye motorways, as well as the south-western section of the Moscow Ring Road (MKAD) is expected to decrease by 7-9%.
The general designer of the metro extension line is Mospromproekt, with Mostotrest as its contractor.
The authorities will further extend the Line 1 by 4.4 km, with construction works for Potapovo station expected to be carried out between 2020 and 2022.
