Amtrak has released some photos of the production process of future Acela trains which will redefine the customer experience on the Northeast Corridor starting 2021.
At the facility in Hornell, New York, Alstom continues to manufacture Amtrak’s next generation of trains, under a contract signed in 2016 for the supply of 28 high-speed trainsets that will replace the equipment used to provide Amtrak’s premium Acela Express service.
The value of the contract is USD 2.45 billion. The first prototype of the new trainsets will be ready during this year, with the first trainset entering revenue service in 2021. All of the trainsets are expected to be in service, and the current fleet retired, by the end of 2022.
The new trainsets will accommodate 386 passengers, an increase of nearly 30 percent, while preserving the spacious, high-end comfort of the current Acela Express service that customers enjoy today. The seats were designed based on feedback from Amtrak customers. Each trainset will have modern amenities that can be upgraded as customer preferences evolve such as improved Wi-Fi access, personal outlets, USB ports and adjustable reading lights at every seat, enhanced food service and a smoother, more reliable ride.
The trainsets will also meet the latest Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) guidelines including a Crash Energy Management system.
Amtrak’s Acela Express service has experienced significant growth from 2.5 million passengers in 2002, to 3.4 million in 2018.
