PKP PLK has launched the tests on the new railway section crossing Krakow, over Kopernika, Grzegórzecka and Miodowa streets. This is one of the last stages before launching a new track in the center of Krakow. It is expected that the line will enter services in July.

The Polish railway infrastructure manager is carrying out one of the most transport projects in the city, envisaging the construction of 4 tracks between the two most important stations of the city – Kraków Główny and Kraków Płaszów, and four overpasses and flyovers, the first of them scheduled to enter commercial operation next month. As part of the modernization of the Krakow mid-range line, the workers rebuild tracks on an almost 20-km stretch. Two of the new railway lines will be dedicated to passenger trains/ commuter services. New stops are created (Krakow Złocień and Kraków Grzegórzki), and existing ones will be reconstructed.
The trains will pass by two new flyovers, with a total length of 750 meters. The tracks were also laid on new viaducts over Kopernika, Grzegórzecka and Miodowa. On the further section, from Miodowa to the railway bridge, the tracks will run along the extended embankment, with continuous construction works. The essential work on new flyovers and overpasses has already ended. Currently, the contractor focuses on finishing works. There are prepared tracks and turnouts, mounted traction poles and railway traffic control devices. A sidewalk is suspended on the side walls of the flyover, which will facilitate maintenance work in the future.
Demolition of the old railway embankment in the center of Krakow and construction of the next three tracks, on similar flyovers and viaducts, will begin. The main construction works, in accordance with the investment schedule, will be completed at the end of 2020-beginning of 2021.
The total value of the investment is PLN 1 billion (EUR 234.7 million), of which CEF provided a EUR 195 million funding under the 2015 Transport Calls. The project envisages the construction of a second pair of tracks, the improvement of railway crossings, the construction of additional railway platforms and the upgrade of electric power connections. Interoperability and safety will be improved due to the upgrade of the parameters of the railway infrastructure.
